The renovation of the historic building of the Riga Circus and development vision for the territory” is an open competition to people.

The aim of this Sketch Design Competition is to obtain a high–quality architectural solution, a functionally well–developed and economically justified sketch design that meets the requirements set out in the brief of the competition. Click COMPETITION BRIEF (PDF document).

The domed Art Nouveau building was erected by Latvian architect Janis Fridrihs Baumanis and used such modern architecture elements as railroad rails as the basis for the building and dome structure which was an absolute novelty at that time.

The subject of the competition is the construction idea for complex reconstruction and prospective development of the territory of the Riga Circus. The construction idea should include architectural and functional solutions for the renovation and expansion of the Riga Circus as well as master plan development proposals and landscaping solutions for the territory.

The total amount of prize money of the competition is 35 000 euros, from which the first place will get 15 000 euros. The proposals must be submitted by June 4, 2018.

Riga Circus is one the oldest circuses in Europe being built in 1888 and the building is a cultural monument of State significance. It was founded by Albert Salamonsky – a brilliant German circus artist, horse trainer, equestrian and a director, who also was in charge of design and construction of the current “Nikulin Circus on Tsvetnoy Boulevard” in Moscow.
