Art Nouveau in Milan

Art Nouveau, which flourished from the late 19th century to the early 20th century, is characterized by its flowing lines, organic forms, and intricate ornamentation. In Milan, this style is prominently showcased in buildings and interiors that capture the essence of nature-inspired design.

Walking through Milan, one can find numerous examples of Art Nouveau architecture. The Casa Galimberti and Casa Guazzoni are notable residential buildings that display elaborate facades adorned with floral motifs, sinuous ironwork, and colorful ceramic tiles. These structures, among others, illustrate how Milanese architects embraced and adapted the Art Nouveau aesthetic to fit the city’s urban landscape.

Description

Itinerary

The 7 hour walking private tour will start at the City Center and and then head to the Porta Venezia district, where you will spend most of the time of the tour. This is the area with the highest concentration of buildings in Liberty, Italian Art Nouveau style.

You will meet your guide in piazza San Babila, a busy and modern area, and after a few minutes you will reach the beautiful Casa Campanini and other very interesting buildings designed by Alfredo Campanini.

From there we will easily reach the so-called “district of silence”, with its luxury Art Nouveau buildings and, most of all, the eerie Casa Berri Meregalli, one of the latest Art Nouveau masterpieces in Milan.

Then we will take some time to enjoy the elegant Palazzo Castiglioni, the earliest example of Liberty in Milano and visit its colourful staircase and refined decorations.

Because Palazzo Castiglioni is now the headquarters of a trade union and there are offices, it will be possible to visit it only on working days.

Let’s then stroll in the most local areas of this tour: the streets via Pisacane, via Castelmorrone and via Stoppani, less famous, but that offer a really complete catalogue of architecture from the 1900s and 1910s. Over there, we will also have a break and stop for a coffee in a nice and traditional cafe not crowded by tourists.

To end the 7-hour tour we will visit the most famous Art Nouveau street of Milan, via Malpighi, and its well-known Casa Galimberti, Casa Guazzoni and the former Cinema Dumont, now a public library.

You will have an hour of free time for you and your group to have lunch. Your guide will recommend you some places for the meal, one of them inside a beautiful Art Nouveau building, others in other places

The last two hours of the tour visiting the art nouveau buildings around Corso Buenos Aires, Piazza Argentina and Piazza Caiazzo areas.

About Liberty in Italy

At the turn of the Century, Art Nouveau, known as Liberty Stile or Floreale Stile in Italy, answered the drive for modernity and internationalism while not excluding the knowledge based on local, and sometimes ancient, traditions of craftsmanship.

Art Nouveau was very popular in cities like Milan, Turin, Palermo or Napoli, and also in the countryside. The affluent built exclusive art nouveau villas on the shores of lakes, chalets in the Alps and also funeral monuments. Our tours in Milan and Turin include a visit to the city cemetery.

In the years 1900, Milanese industry leaders had their weekend near lake Como or lake Maggiore which explains also the use of Art Nouveau in towns like Verbania, Stresa or Bellagio or the Campo dei Fiori near Varese. We can make tailored made tours to these areas. Contact us for more information.

If you love Art Nouveau and stay in Turin it is really worth spending a day in Turin, the City of Magic. You can use the speed train or the car to enjoy the half or full day exclusive private tours that we have prepared in the. Click HERE to get information about them. You will probably sleep in your trip back, or maybe not because you will feel excited after a wonderful day in Milan.

Our tours are not just about sightseeing, they are a unique experience of meeting, learning, discovering and understanding different cultures and returning back home richer than when the journey started. We will show you only Art Nouveau buildings unless you have other requests.
