Description

Itinerary

We present an exclusive 2-hour Private walking tour in Milan’s Boccaccio-Pagano area, a quarter that holds a very important place within the history of Art Nouveau in Europe.

You will discover some of the most stunning examples of Stile Floreale, among which Casa Donzelli in Via Gioberti and Casa Apostolo, both designed by Ulisse Stacchini, who later became the architect of the famous Stazione Centrale, Milan’s main train station.

Other remarkable Liberty style buildings in the area are Casa Donzelli in Via Tasso, with frescoed figures on the façade, Casa Cavalli Agustoni, with beautiful bas-reliefs of female figures, and Casa Carugati Felisari, a refined building inspired by the Viennese Secession style.

Last but not least, the beautiful Villa Faccanoni Romeo (now Clinica Columbus), designed by Giuseppe Sommaruga, the most important Art Nouveau architect of Milan. You will see its ornate gate and facades – with the famous women’s statues removed from Palazzo Castiglioni after they caused an outcry because of their sexy appearance – and most probably visit its garden and former dining room with the original decorations.

If there is some time left, you may also enjoy the Farmacia Santa Teresa, a historic pharmacy which has retained the original Liberty style furniture.

If you love Art Nouveau and only have two hours to dedicate to discover this Art movement, we strongly recommend this exclusive tour. There are several hundreds of Art Nouveau buildings in Milano and during this tour you will discover only some of the nicest ones, visiting the interior of several of them.

About Liberty in Italy

At the turn of the Century, Art Nouveau, known as Liberty Stile or Floreale Stile in Italy, answered the drive for modernity and internationalism while not excluding the knowledge based on local, and sometimes ancient, traditions of craftsmanship.

Art Nouveau was very popular in cities like Milan, Turin, Palermo or Napoli, and also in the countryside. The affluent built exclusive art nouveau villas on the shores of lakes, chalets in the Alps and also funeral monuments. Our tours in Milan and Turin include a visit to the city cemetery.

In the years 1900, Milanese industry leaders had their weekend near lake Como or lake Maggiore which explains also the use of Art Nouveau in towns like Verbania, Stresa or Bellagio or the Campo dei Fiori near Varese. We can make tailored made tours to these areas. Contact us for more information.

Our tours are not just about sightseeing, they are a unique experience of meeting, learning, discovering and understanding different cultures and returning back home richer than when the journey started. We will show you only Art Nouveau buildings unless you have other requests.
