Aveiro Art Nouveau walking private tour (4h)

From: 360

Known as “the little Venice or the Arte Nova gem of Portugal”, Aveiro exhibits a glorious architectural master pieces of Art Nouveau. According to The Guardian,  Aveiro is “one of the 10 cities more important in Europe for Art Nouveau“.

At the end of the 19th century Aveiro became an important trading center just after a canal was constructed. This explains how at the beginning of the 20th century a colonial middle class settled in the city, modernising everything. These traders and industrialists left an important series of Arte Nova works there. This mainly consisted of shops and single-dwelling houses

Also, many Portuguese returned form Brazil with their newly-found wealth. The returned emigrants (and other, wealthier families) built homes with Art Nouveau style, the art movement of fashion at that time of history.

Distinguished as “the city-museum of Art Nouveau in Portugal“, Aveiro is a charming city with works by the names of Ernesto Korrodi, Francisco Augusto da Silva Rocha, Jaime Inácio dos Santos, José de Pinho or Carlos Mendes.

Arte Nova, Portuguese Art Nouveau, started as late as 1904, more than a decade later than in other European countries, but it also ended later, because Portugal was not involved in the First World War. Even though Art Nouveau lasted for a very short time in Portugal it left a strong presence in Aveiro, a small town full of history and hidden gems.

If you and your group love Art Nouveau and travel to Portugal, this tour is a MUST!

Description

Itinerary

This 4-hour private walking tour is a well-explained walk about its Art Nouveau gems in Aveiro, a city considered “the little Venice of Portugal” and “the Arte Nova gem of Portugal“.

In this tour, you’ll get to know the main highlights of Art Nouveau in Aveiro and, strolling through the city centre, you’ll discover several examples of how this style discreetly became present in the architecture, all while learning about the history of Aveiro at the beginning of the 20th century, and its importance in Portuguese history. This tour will also bring you to hidden gems more far away from the city center.

Aveiro is a fantastically unique Portuguese town. Situated inland from the stunning Silver Coast, perched on a peaceful lagoon and historically famed for its salt production; Aveiro can also boast flamboyant architecture, and design that is unlike any other Portuguese city. Tourists should not expect an immaculate old town but this destination is perfect for tourists seeking something different. It is ideally discovered on foot, with a camera to hand.

From the 28 indexed Arte Nova buildings in Aveiro probably the most representative work is Casa do Major Pessoa (1909), which faces the river and was designed by the architects Francisco Silva Rocha and Ernesto Korrodi. It is a magnificent three-storey building made of extremely skillfully worked stone. It also preserves much of its magnificent interior which is the Museum of Art Nouveau, a place included in this itinerary.

With our private tour the visitor will explore and contemplate the architecture and patrimony of this city’s Arte Nova, the name used by Portuguese to describe Art Nouveau. During the tour the guide will explain this artistic style, the context of its emergence, its inspirations, representations and symbols.

During the tour you will stop in a café located at the ground and patio of an Art Nouveau building. You can have a drink and/or cake to make your walk more confortable.

On top of that, after the tour, if you are interested, you can have a Complete lunch in a Art Nouveau Restaurant and Moliceiro boat tour. Add as an Extra if you are interested. This extra activity will take up to 2.5 hours (1.5h for lunch and 45 minutes to 1 hour for the Moliceiro boat tour).
