Description
Itinerary
We could start the half day private walking tour in front of the Ålesund museum, a starting point that gives an overview of the area that we will discover during this tour.
From there we will stroll through “Kongens Gate” walking street, and also go by the harbour to see the Fishing Warehouses that have been converted into Hotels & apartments.
Your expert guide will take you on an informative and very well documented walk through the streets of this enchanting town providing a fascinating and exclusive insight into the history of the town.
In addition to a detailed discovery of more than the 11 protected Art Nouveau buildings in the town, which include the detailed observation of the interior and exterior of Ålesund church, the tour includes an in-depth visit to the Art Nouveau Centre where you will get a summary of the Norwegian Jugendstil.
Regarding the Art Nouveau church we will visit its interior. We will focus more in its structure (both from outside and from inside) rather than in the furniture or sculptures, because the decorative and functional elements found in the interior are not Art Nouveau style. The stained glass windows are of Gesamtkunstwerk style.
The Art Nouveau Centre is inside an old pharmacy building and offers a fascinating insight into the Norwegian art nouveau interiors and objects. Our visit there will be exhaustive and we will explain you the context so you can understand how was the city at that time.
Finally if you want we can have a coffee and cake in a relaxed way in the Art Nouveau Centre’s coffee house.

about Ålesund
The town of Ålesund is a sea port that fascinates with Art Nouveau architecture, a town that could be taken right out of a fairy tale. Amongst the main features of the Art Nouveau buildings in Ålesund stands out the decorative ornamentation of the façades based on pre-historic or medieval animal, plant-ornamentation and also other features of symbolism in the decoration.
Clean and welcoming, Ålesund owes its charm to a fire that ripped through its wooden foundations a century ago, destroying everything except the prison and a church. From its ashes a new stone city was born and almost all designed by young Norwegian architects trained in Germany. Influenced by Jugendstil, a synonim of art nouveau, they designed buildings rich in ornamentation, with towers, spiers, gargoyles and other elements based on native motifs.
The view from the upper part of the city is one of the most emblematic. If you feel this private tour can be of interest to your friends…
