Immerse yourself in the golden age of Prague’s Art Nouveau on this exclusive full day private tour, where you’ll explore the city’s architectural masterpieces, hidden gems, and the legendary café culture that defined the era. Far from the typical tourist trail, this experience reveals the elegance and innovation of a movement that shaped Prague’s identity at the turn of the 20th century.

Your journey begins in the heart of the city, where your guide will introduce you to the vibrant Art Nouveau landmarks of Prague’s Old Town and New Town. We’ll start at a historic café, a true time capsule of the era, where you’ll uncover the political, social, and urban transformations that made Prague a hub of creativity. Here, you’ll learn how Art Nouveau and café culture intertwined, becoming the beating heart of the city’s intellectual and artistic life.

From there, we’ll stroll through the New Town, admiring the movement’s signature flourishes on grand buildings, theaters, and private residences. In the Jewish Quarter, you’ll discover how Art Nouveau became a symbol of modernity and cultural pride for Prague’s Jewish community, with buildings that blended private, public, and religious functions in stunning harmony.

Next, we’ll head to Wenceslas Square and the surrounding streets, where you’ll see firsthand how Art Nouveau transformed Prague into a modern metropolis. The area is home to some of the city’s most iconic buildings, designed by visionaries like Osvald Polívka and Bedřich Bendelmayer.

If the weather is kind, we may also visit a hidden rooftop terrace with panoramic views of one of Prague’s Art Nouveau highlights. While the venue now requires visitors to enjoy a drink, your guide will help you decide if it’s the perfect way to cap off your experience.

Art Nouveau – Secession Style

Secession is the name for Art Nouveau in Hungary, Czech Republic, Austria and all the areas that until 1914 belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

In Prague, Art Nouveau transcended mere aesthetics, becoming a powerful expression of Czech identity and cultural renewal within the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The movement resonated deeply with the city’s diverse communities, offering a modern, progressive visual language that reflected Prague’s aspirations for autonomy and artistic innovation. Though initially met with resistance from conservative circles, Art Nouveau found enthusiastic support among the city’s burgeoning middle class, including the Jewish bourgeoisie, who embraced it as a symbol of their evolving place in society.

By the late 19th century, Prague was undergoing a dramatic transformation, its population swelling and its skyline expanding with a wave of new construction. Many of these buildings were adorned in the sinuous lines and organic motifs of Art Nouveau, a style that left an indelible mark on the city. At the forefront of this architectural revolution was Osvald Polívka, often hailed as Prague’s answer to Gaudí, whose visionary designs—such as the Municipal House—blended national pride with artistic daring. Other key figures, including Bedřich Bendelmayer and Jan Kotěra, contributed iconic works that defined the city’s aesthetic, from grand public buildings to intimate residential spaces.

Today, Prague’s Art Nouveau legacy endures, with several of its masterpieces—like the Hotel Central and the Topičův Salon—celebrated as cultural treasures. Efforts are underway to preserve and honor these landmarks, ensuring that the movement’s spirit continues to inspire future generations.
