Aveiro embraces the Art Nouveau Festival celebration with four days of performances, music, and culture as a way to highlight its architectural legacy and promote artistic expression in all its forms.

This Saturday marks the beginning of the Art Nouveau Festival in the city of Aveiro, a vibrant celebration of the spirit and elegance of the Art Nouveau movement. Running until June 10, the event features a special program spread across various cultural venues in the city.

Program Highlights

The festival opens on Saturday with the street performance “Pennyfly” by Companhia Marimbondo, presented twice—at 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM. The visually engaging show promises to delight passersby with its whimsical energy.

Later that evening, at 9:30 PM, the Art Nouveau Museum Courtyard will host “Jazz Me”, a performance by The Jazz Shakers. The show recreates the exuberance of the Roaring Twenties with a troupe of dancers in vintage costumes, moving to the rhythm of the Belle Époque.

On Sunday, June 8, at 4:00 PM, the Dixie Gang will give a themed concert in the same courtyard, transporting the audience to the early 20th-century Mississippi River cruises with classic jazz sounds evoking the musical ambiance of that era.

Monday, June 9, is dedicated to visual arts and cinema. At 6:00 PM, the Art Nouveau Museum will screen two documentaries: “Art Nouveau in Aveiro” by Alexandre Humbert, focusing on the European Art Nouveau project, and “From Shadow to Color: The Birth of Cinema.”

Later that night, at 9:30 PM, the museum hosts a piano recital titled “Sound Reflections in Shades of Color” by Inês Filipe, offering an emotive musical journey through expressive piano tones.

Throughout all four days of the festival, guided tours and creative workshops will be held daily, inviting residents and visitors alike to explore and experience the beauty of Art Nouveau in Aveiro.

here will be shows, performances, visits and workshops related to this year’s theme: COLOUR. Art Nouveau has a unique colour palette, also associated with the presence of tiles. Dedicated to commemorate World Art Nouveau Day (10 June), it is celebrated throughout Europe in partnership with the member cities of the Réseau Art Nouveau Network, a cultural itinerary of the Council of Europe.
