Itinerary

During this exclusive 4-hour architecture & cafés walking private tour you will learn about Art Nouveau times in Budapest, discover some of its main highlights and enjoy some charming places that are not usually seen by the average tourist.

The walking tour will start in the very center of the inner city and from there our guide will show you some buildings of the 5th District.

We will bring you to a classic cafe to give you an introduction to history, politics and urban development at the turn of the 19th and 20th Centuries and explain you how art nouveau and cafés fit into this. After, we will continue our tour through the inner city of Pest.

In the Jewish District, we will appreciate important buildings for different uses (private, hospitality, religious) and you will learn why this was the edge of the city and the importance of this art style to the community of Hungarian Jews.

We will head to the Andrássy avenue and you will discover first hand how the new avenue changed Budapest life becoming the vein of the new metropolis. This important avenue has several iconic Secession buildings to see.

If the weather is great we may visit also a rooftop bar with fantastic views over an Art Nouveau city highlight. Now the hotel obliges visitors to have at least a drink, so you will decide together with your guide if you want to go there. It will be a visit worth remembering.

The role of Coffehouses

This tour is informative and amusing because it mixes the historical/architectural views with an interesting explanation about the important role of coffee shops during the Art Nouveau era.

The decoration of the café places visited during the tour will transport you in time. In one of the coffee places they produce and sell very original and good confectionary, certainly an interesting discovery for those having a sweet tooth.

Art Nouveau – Secession Style

Secession is the name for Art Nouveau in Hungary, Czech Republic, Austria and all the areas that until 1914 belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

In Budapest the Art Nouveau movement was more than just an art style because it provided a shared platform for both Christians and Jews to express their Hungarian identity (history and culture) within the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. The new style was not accepted by the mainstream and the authorities for a long time but it satisfied the bourgeois Jews’ needs of group identification.

In the last quarter of the 19th century the city of Budapest reached almost a million people and more than doubled its number of buildings. Many of these buildings were built in Secession style, Hungarian Art Nouveau, and one of the main architects involved in these projects was Ödön Lechner, known as the Hungarian Gaudí. Other key architects of that time were Béla Lajta, Aladár Árkay and István Medgyaszay.

The foremost architect associated with this style is Ödön Lechner, and Hungary has submitted five of his masterpieces, including the Museum of Applied Arts, the Royal Postal Savings Bank and the Institute of Geology, for inclusion in Unesco’s World Heritage list.
